Hālau – a shelter for sharing in teaching and learning
ʻŌlelo – language
Hālau ʻŌlelo is an online institution for individuals who choose and commit to personal and professional growth, training and development in a living Hawaiian language cultural base.
What is Hālau ʻŌlelo?
Members of Hālau ʻŌlelo channel, amplify and facilitate a greater world perspective by enrolling in what a living Hawaiian language allows possible to honor their environment, ancestors and the legacy they are creating in their communities.
We are currently 65 men and women, from Israel to Hawaiʻi who choose Hawaiian as an authentic priority in our lives, in both personal and professional spaces and relationships.

Kainoa Embernate, founder and director of Hālau ʻŌlelo: Hawaiian Language Worldwide, is an educator of Hawaiian language and culture from Hilo, Hawaiʻi. He holds a Master of Arts in Indigenous Language and Culture Education, a post-baccalaureate certificate in Indigenous Teacher Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Hawaiian Studies from Ka Haka ʻUla o Keʻelikōlani College of Hawaiian Language at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo. He lectured undergraduate and graduate courses at UHH. In addition, he taught pre-kindergarten through high school students at the Hawaiian immersion laboratory school, Ke Kula ʻo Nāwahīokalaniʻōpuʻu in Keaʻau, Hawaiʻi.
Based in New York City, Kainoa is a source to cultural practicioners, culinarians, performing and teaching artists, writers, filmmakers and scholars looking to grow Hawaiian, Polynesian and Oceanic presence in New York City and around the world.
All new members are strongly encouraged to enroll in a Chapter One class no matter the extent of their previous Hawaiian language learning and sharing. Hālau ʻŌlelo's methodology of language instruction offers a deeper sense of language intention, functionality and responsibility. Chapter One classes provide the scope, sequence and foundation of future learning and sharing with Hālau ʻŌlelo.
